2. Trump and GOP Melt Down

Sep. 30, 2019

There is a reason that the best “A Closer Look” segments came over the final months of 2019. The Ukraine scandal has been history unfolding in front of us and culminated with Donald Trump becoming the third president ever impeached.

Late Night with Seth Meyers was there every step of the way, connecting dots and make the kind of comedic observations that earned the show an Emmy nomination. Beyond the big picture ramifications of President Trump’s alleged quid pro quo, Meyers was able pick apart not only President Trump but his Republican allies who desperately tried to defend him.

So while President Trump was accusing Democrats of treason, Meyers was accusing Republicans of being hypocrites and sycophants. “A Closer Look” was one of the first segments in late night that went after the entire Republican Party during the Ukraine scandal and was closely followed by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Knowing now that the Ukraine scandal resulted in President Trump’s impeachment, it is interesting to see here how accurate Meyers was in analyzing the situation. Meyers said that reality was catching with President Trump and argued the President doesn’t have the mental capacity to handle it. And GOP members who hitched their wagons to the President were going off the rails. Both points were solidified in the following months as impeachment evolved.
