Stephen Colbert suggested President Donald Trump is living in an alternate reality following the release of a Justice Department Inspector General report.

“Witch hunt” is one of President Donald Trump’s favorite catchphrases. It is also one of Stephen Colbert’s favorite lines to mock on The Late Show. And after a Department of Justice Inspector General report found that there was no bias involved in the Russia investigation, and therefore no “witch hunt,” Colbert turned it up a notch.

The report dismissed any notion or conspiracy theory that a massive coup was afoot perpetrated by the “deep state.” The IG indicated that there was sufficient evidence to warrant an investigation into possible cooperation between President Trump’s campaign and Russia.

Yet as we have seen in the pass, President Trump is…hesitant to accept any information or facts that contradict his own views. Still, it was surprising to hear the President comment that the exact opposite of the IG’s findings were true.

Stephen Colbert and the rest of late night have been calling out President Trump’s “witch hunt” claims since they began. The Late Show host called the IG report an early Christmas present, continuing his theme of treating impeachment  like a holiday. And just like a world of magic elves and flying reindeer, Colbert thinks Donald Trump is living in an alternate reality.

Stephen Colbert is always first in line to make fun of President Trump. But here, Colbert takes time out to say that a president living in an alternate reality is dangerous. It puts a peaceful transition of power in jeopardy in the event President Trump is defeated in the 2020 election. Such serious asides from Colbert are typically a good indication of the severity of a situation at least in the comedian’s mind.

In getting back to the jokes. Colbert tries his hand at living in an alternate reality by offering his own conclusions from the IG report. If the findings are the report are up for interpretation, then Colbert says President Trump is responsible for no female directors getting a Golden Globe nomination.

Facts getting in the way of an argument or conspiracy theory has never stopped the Trump administration before. And while the White House hyped the release of the DOJ report as something that would exonerate President Trump, that did not end up being the case. But in Trump World, all news is good news and there is no Late Show with Stephen Colbert in that reality.

Articles of impeachment are expected to be drafted any day now. When that happens, it will be the equivalent of the gifts being wrapped and placed under Stephen Colbert’s impeachment tree. President Donald Trump’s trial will reveal if the Late Show host gets what he wanted. If that’s so, then President Trump is in for a reality check. Stay tuned.
