Stephen Colbert doesn’t think that Senator Lindsey Graham’s strategy is strong enough to protect President Donald Trump.

Each new development in the impeachment inquiry has signaled more bad news for President Donald Trump. It has also meant bad news for his supporters like Senator Lindsey Graham. Graham found himself the target of Wednesday night’s monologue on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Stephen Colbert has been keeping a close eye on who remains in support of President Trump. It seems as if Colbert knows the President is a lost cause when it comes to demonstrating morals, ethics, or even lawful behavior while in office.

But those who had careers in politics long before Donald Trump became president have become punchlines for Colbert. The Late Show host has ripped Republicans he views as so desperate to remain in power and in the good graces of President Trump.

One such Republican is Senator Lindsey Graham. Graham has come a long way from blasting Donald Trump the candidate to know being one of President Trump’s fiercest allies. As evidence of a quid pro quo mounts against the President, Graham is standing his ground no matter how ignorant he may look as Colbert explained on Wednesday.

Senator Graham being mocked by late night is nothing new. Saturday Night Live fans have seen Kate McKinnon portray the senator while comedians like John Oliver and Seth Meyers have done the same on their shows.

Even so, Stephen Colbert sounds a little shocked to hear Graham’s latest strategy when it comes to defending President Trump. Even after claiming that hearing testimony that a quid pro quo would be disturbing, Graham is now refusing to read any transcripts of testimony doing just that.

It is the latest in what Colbert calls the “five stages of Republican impeachment grief.” The more ignorant Republicans remain of the facts, the easier it will be to defend Donald Trump. It’s either that, or what Colbert suggested was the final option: tell the truth.

The public testimony will no doubt be something of a circus as Republicans take the opportunity to defend President Trump. There will also be no doubt that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will be ready to call out anymore “willful ignorance” on display.
