The Daily Show recalls another Barack Obama scandal
By Matt Moore
The Daily Show continues to remind people that President Barack Obama’s time in office was full of controversies.
Time and time again we have seen politicians try to portray him or herself as “one of the people.” This can be a tricky thing to pull off when so many politicians are wealthy or have become detached from life for everyday Americans. Even Barack Obama, considered a president of the people, struggled with this as The Daily Show reminded us.
It may seem like the administration of President Donald Trump invented controversy or scandal with the way it is covered, especially in late night. Everything from weather maps to the First Lady’s wardrobe choices to spelling errors in tweets gets analyzed and mocked.
But The Daily Show with Trevor Noah has been working to portray a more balanced approach to covering presidential scandals. The Comedy Central show has been taking time out of covering Trump to remind viewers that President Barack Obama had his share of slip ups and controversies.
The latest involves Obama failing to live up to his “man of the people” reputation while out visiting regular folks in 2009. As The Daily Show states, Obama’s decision rocked his administration to the core:
The Dijon mustard decision was infamous at the time. President Barack Obama couldn’t resist getting fancy, skipping ketchup in exchange for the condiment of the elite. Fox News hosts were quick to call out the President with Laura Ingraham questioning just what kind of man American had in the White House.
It stands in stark contrast to the everyman president we now have in Donald Trump. A president who eats fast food like KFC and McDonald’s and isn’t afraid to serve up some “hamberders” at an official White House event.
As always, the satire from The Daily Show hits the mark. Trevor Noah often questions how Trump, a wealthy real estate mogul from New York City, convinced so many middle Americans that he was one of them. The outrage demonstrated by conservative news outlets over Dijon mustard is far more extreme than any reaction to a Trump policy or action with real world consequences.
The Barack Obama years may be long gone but his scandals and controversies will live on in infamy. And as President Donald Trump continues to get criticized for his every action, The Daily Show will continue to say “Yeah, but remember when Obama…”
