A special guest is booked on six different late night shows in one night. Who is getting ready to take over late night?

Something special is going on in late night television on Thursday Aug. 8. The six biggest shows are all scheduled to feature a “special” or “surprise” guest. Fans are already convinced they know who is planning the late night take over.

It has become less uncommon for late night shows to collaborate in some way or another. Hosts frequently appear as guests on other shows, like Conan O’Brien on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. We have also seen O’Brien, Colbert, and Jimmy Fallon do a bit together that aired on both The Late Show and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

But a different sort of collaboration is set for Thursday Aug. 8. Six shows all have a “special guest” planned as their top guest of the night. The shows are:

  • The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon
  • The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
  • The Late Late Show with James Corden
  • Jimmy Kimmel Live!
  • Late Night with Seth Meyers
  • Conan

It is extremely unlikely that all six shows are set to feature a different special guest. This has led to speculation as to who has the star power to book the top six late night shows all at once. Could President Donald Trump be coming to bury the hatchet with late night once and for all?

Don’t hold your breath on that one. Instead, the popular opinion floating around online is that Rihanna will use late night to announce her next album. Reports that it was a “big female singer” who booked the spots led some to guess it is Rihanna who has not released an album since 2016.

Rihanna does have a good relationship with late night television. It was just recently that she spent some time day drinking with Seth Meyers for Late Night. Meyers was also asked by Rihanna to host her charity event the Diamond Ball in September.

Before that, Rihanna also did a bit on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where she pranked Kimmel at his home. The clip from 2015 has racked up 32 million views on YouTube up to this point.

We haven’t seen Rihanna sit down with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show but the singer is still a popular discussion topic for other guests. Adele has mentioned she can’t wait for new music from Rihanna while Chris Rock, Aaron Paul, and Jim Parsons have all talked about the singer with Fallon. Similarly, the singer has been discussed a handful of times on The Late Late Show with James Corden.

It would also be the first time Rihanna has worked with Conan O’Brien on something. Conan is scheduled to air reruns all week with the exception of the mystery Aug. 8 date. The show is a half-hour program so expect a pre-recorded introduction from O’Brien before launching in to whatever the mystery guest has planned.

If it is Rihanna, what exactly she has planned is still a mystery. For late night fans, it would ideally feature Fallon, Meyers, Colbert, Corden, Kimmel, and O’Brien all together. But with the hosts divided between New York City and Los Angeles, it seems unlikely that everyone’s schedule lined up to film something unless this has been planned for months.

Instead, the most likely scenario is a clip from Rihanna announcing her album and then perhaps the premiere of a music video. Still, using late night shows to promote her project would suggest some level of humor involved.
