Stephen Colbert discredited President Donald Trump’s claim that he quickly stopped supporters from chanting “send her back.”

A common strategy of President Donald Trump is to claim he did or did not do or say something, even if it was all on camera. A common response to this from Stephen Colbert is to prove President Trump wrong.

Colbert got another chance to do this on Thursday’s The Late Show. The controversy around President Trump’s racist tweets is still going. It didn’t help that the president first doubled down on on his comments and then his supporters started repeating his sentiments.

During a rally in North Carolina, Trump supporters broke out into a “send her back” chant in reference to Representative Ilhan Omar. Omar was born in Somalia but has been a U.S. citizen since she was 17.

It was an ugly scene that was criticized by all sides. President Trump attempted to distance himself by claiming he quickly began speaking to drown out the chant. However, Stephen Colbert wanted to check the tape on that one:

Colbert did his best to recap the rally prior to the chant. Like most Trump rallies, it was all over the place and featured the president flipping between prepared remarks and improvised comments on everything from The Apprentice to his rich friend Richard.

Regarding the chant, Colbert focuses on Trump’s claim that he started speaking very quickly to get the crowd to stop. The rally was filmed so this is something that can be easily fact-checked. According to the official Late Show stopwatch, it took the president 12 seconds to begin talking again. Not exactly quick as Colbert says.

Colbert also calls out Trump’s attempt to distance himself further from the crowd by suggesting he didn’t say “send her back.” But it all comes back to Trump’s tweets and Colbert wasn’t going to let the president get by on that one either.

As we get closer and closer to the 2020 election, the more President Donald Trump will be holding rallies. If he continues to act like whatever he says won’t leave the room, then fans will get a lot more monologues like this one from Stephen Colbert.
