Stephen Colbert returned from a two week break to go after President Donald Trump for his controversial tweets.

Coming back to your job from a two week vacation and being on top of your game right off the bat is no easy task. But for Stephen Colbert, his return to The Late Show felt like he never left as he picked up right where he left off in calling out President Trump.

Millions of late night fans turn to Colbert every night to hear his reaction to the day’s news. Any concern that Colbert’s heavy focus on politics would be detrimental has gone away as The Late Show consistently tops the ratings.

So the past two weeks haven’t been easy for viewers searching out The Late Show clips after every major news story broke from Washington, D.C. But the wait was over Monday night just in time for Colbert to respond to President Trump’s tweets attacking members of Congress.

Stephen Colbert’s reaction is predictable for anyone familiar with his point of view. It is also predictable because a number of people have called out the president for being racist following these tweets. But the reason so many people watch Colbert is because he can articulate how they are feeling in an entertaining fashion.

The Late Show host immediately points out the flaw in Trump’s argument without even getting in to the racist part. Trump suggests that member of Congress shouldn’t tell the country how to run the government. Of course, they were all elected to their position to…run the government.

You can sense a little bit of anger in Colbert when he talks about how offensive it is to Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley that their heritage or commitment to country be questioned.

Colbert went on to try to explain Trump’s thought process behind including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi in his tweets. According to Colbert, Trump’s attempt to diving the Democratic Party won’t work because the party is united around getting Trump out of office.

Colbert wasn’t done there. When he saw that President Trump basically doubled down on his tweets, it was more than the comedian could take. He went off on Trump in one of the more brutal Late Show tirades and also turned his attention to Republicans defending the president.

It is clear that there was no rust on Stephen Colbert and the rest of The Late Show after a two week break. Per usual, President Donald Trump did his part and gave Colbert more than enough material for his show. It’s already shaping up to be an interesting week in late night.
