Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez visited the Late Show with Stephen Colbert to discuss life in Congress during the government shutdown.

It seems as though that in the past decade, some politicians have been reaching new levels of popularity and fame. Things certainly reached a new level during Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in 2008. And Bernie Sanders’ run in 2016 proved the attention wasn’t just reserved for younger candidates. Next in this line appears to be Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Ocasio-Cortez has received plenty of media attention starting with her unlikely primary win that led to her representing New York’s 14th district. By doing so she became the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. Add that to her leverage of social media and you can understand why so many people are interested in a freshmen member of Congress.

But Ocasio-Cortez is more than just a nice story and instead has become something of a lightning rod. As a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, she is both cheered by liberals and dismissed by conservatives.

Yet AOC seems unafraid of the attention or criticism. She has not backed away from the spotlight but instead embraced it. Television appearances have included The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and now multiple spots on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Last Night On had Ocasio-Cortez’s appearance on The Late Show as one of the five guests to watch for this week. And she certainly didn’t disappoint for anyone who tuned in to hear her speak, regardless of political position. Like it or not, AOC is ready to have her voice heard in Congress:

One thing we’ve learned during President Donald Trump’s presidency is how important Twitter has become to politics. It hasn’t always been for the best. But President Trump sees it as his best way to communicate with the public and many Republicans have followed that example. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez just seems to be better at it than everyone else.

The “#WheresMitch” initiative that AOC helped start went viral and placed plenty more negative attention on Senator Mitch McConnell. It is what is surely just the beginning of Ocasio-Cortez “making trouble” in Congress.

Stephen Colbert went on to talk about marginal tax rates with the representative. A lot has been made about her proposed rate of 70% and what exactly that means. It’s something she has been criticized for yet has been quick to respond on social media.
