Late Night with Seth Meyers took ‘A Closer Look’ at President Donald Trump’s controversial comments about foreign election interference.

Perhaps the biggest concern heading in to the 2020 presidential election is the threat of outside interference. It played a role in 2016 and unless certain measures are taken, it could happen again. Yet as Seth Meyers explained in “A Closer Look,” President Donald Trump doesn’t seem concerned about foreign entities getting involved in American elections.

The extent of Russian interference in the last presidential election formed the bulk of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report. After accidentally acknowledging that the Russians helped him win, President Trump quickly reversed course and stated that he alone was responsible for defeating Hillary Clinton.

But that didn’t prevent him from taking a firm stance against foreign influences. An interview with ABC News showed Trump admitting that if an foreign government offered information on his 2020 opponent then he would take it.  Those comments got the attention of a lot of people including Seth Meyers on Thursday’s Late Night.

Seth Meyers starts off by recapping the Trump news that dominated headlines prior to the foreign dirt comments. Reports indicated that Trump was losing to Joe Biden in internal polls while independent polls found that Trump would lose to at least six different Democrats in 2020. In typical Trump fashion he claimed those numbers were made up and that he only wants the truth reported.

From there Meyers focused on the comments that really turned heads. The Late Night host that Trump contradicts years of his “no collusion” stance in one sentence by admitting that he would listen to a foreign government with information about a political opponent. Meyers’ reaction is similar to how a lot of people did including Democrats already pushing for impeachment.

President Trump’s response on Twitter provided another classic moment for late night hosts to enjoy. Trump reminded everyone that he met with the Prince of “Whales” while in Great Britain. And while he did delete that tweet and update it to “Wales,” the original typo had already set social media on fire with more jokes at the president’s expense.

This one interview with ABC featured just about everything that Seth Meyers likes to mock President Trump for during “A Closer Look”: Lying, admitting to crimes, showing incompetence, contradicting himself, and spelling things wrong on Twitter.

Seth Meyers calls for President Donald Trump’s impeachment once again at the end of the segment. It’s something he has wanted long before these comments about accepting foreign information but it will be interesting to see if they are enough to get more Democrats to take a closer look at the White House.
