John Mulaney was going to go down as a Saturday Night Live legend even if he never hosted an episode. As a writer, he was instrumental in creating some of the best sketches during the time of Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, and Andy Samberg. It was Mulaney who gave us Stefon after all.

But Mulaney has added to his SNL legacy by hosting the show twice now. He returned on March 2, 2019. It was one of the season’s best rated episodes thanks in part to Mulaney’s giant fanbase he has generated from both his time at SNL and his successful stand-up career.

The highlight of Mulaney’s first time hosting was “Diner Lobster,” a Les Miserables spoof featuring Kenan Thompson as a singing lobster finally ordered by a diner customer. Fans knew there was a chance Mulaney would give them another musical number in 2019 and he came through.

To do that, he took things to the next level with multiple musical references. This sketch hits if you’re a fan of musicals or if you’re familiar with life in New York City. The bodega jokes may land better with some people just like the musical spoofs.

There is no doubt that John Mulaney will be hosting Saturday Night Live again and again over the years. The good news for fans is that he may already have an idea for a third musical sketch in mind. Stay tuned!
