The Late Show with Stephen Colbert continues to have unparalleled access to the White House, this time talking to Stephen Miller.

As President Donald Trump’s immigration policies and proposals get more extreme, people are increasingly turning their attention to Stephen Miller. The senior advisor to the president is often credited with shaping Trump’s immigration stance. That means he has become a frequent target of Stephen Colbert on The Late Show.

The latest story has been the White House’s plan to release detained immigrants into “sanctuary cities” including those found in Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s district in California. Miller has been identified as the brains behind the idea.

This would further support what Seth Meyers recently discussed regarding Trump ignoring laws in favor of listening to Miller when it comes to immigration. Stephen Colbert decided to take things one step further by interviewing “Stephen Miller” about any other immigration ideas he may have:

It looks like even though President Trump finds Colbert boring and one-sided, his wife Melania and advisor Stephen Miller have no problem stopping by The Late Show. But it’s clear that Colbert doesn’t have the same chemistry with Miller (Peter Grosz) that he does with the First Lady.

Colbert is clearly set on making Stephen Miller a primary villain in the Trump administration. As more and more cabinet members are fired or resign, Miller’s influence seems to increase. Colbert is doing his part in late night to remind fans that this isn’t exactly good news.

Mock interviews like this one are a creative way for Colbert and his writers to get jokes out about Miller and the rest of Team Trump. By having the fake Stephen Miller speak honestly, Colbert is trying to figure out the thought process behind everything Trump’s administration is doing. It is a similar strategy to what Seth Meyers has been doing with his recent “A Closer Look” segments.

What we are seeing is late night shows continuing to find new and different ways to cover what seems like the same stories. As the policies and proposals from the White House get more extreme, The Late Show and others are trying to cover these stories with humor. It’s not an easy task but one Colbert is eager to take on.
