Late Night with Seth Meyers: A preview of tonight’s special episode
By Matt Moore
Here’s what to expect when you tune in to a special episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers on Thursday night.
There is a lot going on in the worlds of politics and pop culture. That can mean that even doing five, one-hour long shows a week isn’t enough to cover everything. So to fix that, Late Night with Seth Meyers will air a very special episode on April 18.
While ratings for Late Night with Seth Meyers dipped slightly last week, along with the rest of late night, the show remains the leader in its time slot. Additionally, Late Night‘s YouTube clips routinely get hundreds of thousands to millions of views.
Clearly there is a strong audience for Seth Meyers and how he views news and pop culture. So with this week being a huge one in both those categories, it is fitting that Late Night will be airing a special 90-minute episode tonight on NBC. Here’s why:
The Mueller report
Thursday morning marked the release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report to Congress and to the public. While heavily redacted, the report finally gave everyone a chance to read through for themselves and not rely only on Attorney General William Barr’s summary.
The Mueller report has been a popular topic of discussion for late night and Seth Meyers especially. So with the report coming out, Meyers and his writers know they’ll have a lot to talk about. Some extra time from NBC ensures that Late Night can take “A Closer Look” at not only the report but Barr’s press conference as well as President Trump’s reaction.
Game of Jones
If you don’t care too much for politics, then chances are your week has been all about Game of Thrones. Season eight debuted on HBO Sunday night and was watched by a massive audience.
Meyers is a big fan of the show, having done bits with GoT actors Kit Harington and Carice van Houten in the past. But the best content Meyers has given fans is with help from Saturday Night Live‘s Leslie Jones.
Nobody has reactions quite like Leslie Jones and no show gets reactions out of fans quite like Game of Thrones. It is a match made in comedy heaven and credit goes to Late Night for putting the segment together.
Jones and Meyers watched Sunday night’s episode together and the plan is to show “Game of Thrones” on Thursday night. Given the popularity of the two previous installments, it makes sense for the show to need a little extra time to get the newest one on the air.
Big name guests
Of course, Seth Meyers also needs to interview a couple guests to round out the show. Rather than bump anyone Late Night is free to run normal interviews thanks to the extended time.
Comedian and actress Amy Sedaris will be the first interview. The Strangers with Candy, BoJack Horseman, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star has visited Late Night a few times in the past. She’ll be promoting her TruTV comedy series At Home with Amy Sedaris.
South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg will also be on the show. He arrives fresh off formally announcing himself as a Democratic candidate for president in 2020. The 37 year old has been gaining a lot of support in just a short amount of time while trying to differentiate himself from the other Democratic candidates.
Singer Toro y Moi, also known as Chaz Bear, will be the musical guest. It’s a packed lineup for Late Night but thankfully fans won’t be short-changed on anything.
Late Night with Seth Meyers will air tonight, April 18, at its normal 12:35 ET time on NBC. The extra half hour long show will bump back Last Call with Carson Daily but that show is already a scheduled repeat. Enjoy Late Night and check back with Last Night On for all the highlights!
