10. Conan’s Trip to Ireland (1999)

Conan O’Brien has used his Irish heritage for laughs time and time again over the past 25 years. Typically it is to self-deprecating effect to point out his pale skin, red hair and freckles, and a proneness to drinking and depression. His Irish jokes certainly haven’t slowed down in 2019 as proven by his recent stop on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to discuss his ancestry results.

But back before you could send away a sample of saliva and find out where you came from, you had to actually go out in to the world and discover it for yourself. We’re talking all the way back to 1999. Finding his heritage was the motivation behind one of Conan’s first trips back to Ireland for his show.

The piece demonstrates many of the reasons why “Conan Without Borders” has become a huge success for O’Brien. He will just as quickly mess with people using doctored family photos as he will let himself be the joke with ridiculous dancing and singing or chasing his hat along the cliffs.

We also get to see Conan’s ability to talk to just about anyone. It has become the best part of any travel special. Interviewing a celebrity about prepared topics is one thing, but its another to try to talk to the Irish Burt Reynolds after a few pints.
