Stephen Colbert exposes President Trump’s double life
By Matt Moore
Stephen Colbert looked at how Michael Cohen’s testimony revealed the ‘parallel lives’ of President Trump.
The Congressional testimony of President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen may have been days ago but the information he provided is still being analyzed. That fact is certainly true for Stephen Colbert who is catching up on the news after a week off from The Late Show.
Colbert used his first night back attempting to interpret President Trump’s two-hour long CPAC speech. The late night host could only refer to it as “strange” as he evaluated Trump’s performance. It is a similar concept he explored on Wednesday night.
Much has been made about the checks Trump wrote from his personal bank account to reimburse Michael Cohen. It is alleged that those funds were used to cover up an alleged affair with Stormy Daniels. With more copies of the checks uncovered by the press, connections are being drawn between the dates and Trump’s time in office. This was what Stephen Colbert wanted to focus on during last night’s show.
It has become very clear to most Americans that President Trump has a much different side than the successful businessman and deal-maker that he projects. Late night has hammered this home plenty of times in the past.
But while Trump is in office, everything he does and everywhere he goes as president is recorded. That makes it easy for the press and Colbert to compare payments made to Cohen with what Trump was doing that day as president. This is the “double life” of Donald Trump.
Colbert exposes both the unsettling and humorous days that Trump paid Cohen. On the one hand, you have it on the same day Trump asked to dismiss an investigation into former national security adviser General Michael Flynn. On the other hand, you have Trump signing checks on the same day he pardoned a turkey and on Valentine’s Day. Maybe Jimmy Kimmel was right about Melania Trump.
As Colbert points out, it all adds up to why 64% of Americans believe Trump has committed a crime. It doesn’t quite explain his support among Republicans. But maybe that represents more of the “double lives” going on in the Trump era.
