Trevor Noah recaps his Oscars after-party experience
By Matt Moore
The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah told his audience how easily he was star struck at the Academy Awards.
The Academy Awards may have been on Sunday but everyone is still talking about the night’s biggest moments. Just as important as the award show were the after parties throughout Hollywood. If you’re curious as to what it would be like to attend one, then listen to Trevor Noah.
The host of The Daily Show was a presenter at the Oscars, introducing Black Panther as one of the night’s nominees for Best Picture. During his spot he recited a phrase in Xhosa that he translated as “In times like these, we are stronger when we fight together than when we try to fight apart.”
However that wasn’t exactly accurate. Instead it was another joke in Noah’s appearance. The phrase Noah said actually translated to: “White people don’t know I’m lying.” That alone would have been the highlight of Noah’s night but it was far from over. The comedian recalled his night at the Oscars after parties:
As a quick side not, the “Between the Scenes” clips from The Daily Show are becoming must-see videos. Noah speaks his mind in an even more unfiltered way on some of the biggest topics in the news and from his personal life. He’s discussed the Jussie Smollett incident that was especially insightful.
But back to the Oscars parties. It’s refreshing to hear Noah dismiss anyone who acts “too cool” for the Academy Awards. It is very predictable to look at social media on Oscars night and see people making a point to post about how much they don’t care about the show. Yet there is no denying the cultural significance of films and the benefits of celebrating artists’ achievements.
Going even further, Trevor Noah tells us that he acted and behaved just like any non-famous person would at one of these parties. He was in awe of “real” celebrities like Jennifer Lopez or Beyonce. He was intimidated by Usher on the dance floor. Sounds like a pretty big contrast from the Noah who made that joke on stage earlier in the night or who sits down with some pretty big names on The Daily Show.
With news and stories coming out about the Oscars after parties, that about wraps up the award season. Focus will now turn to 2019’s movies and the next batch of Academy Award hopefuls. It’s a safe bet to assume that Trevor Noah will be back to present again next year, if only to get another taste of the “real” Hollywood.
