Seth Meyers on Trump’s self-sabotaging national emergency declaration
By Matt Moore
Seth Meyers took a closer look at President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration and attacks on his critics.
When it comes to offering a response to President Donald Trump, few can do it like the late night hosts. Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee, and Trevor Noah are all excellent at providing comical and insightful rebuttals to the president. Seth Meyers is certainly in that category as well. But on last night’s Late Night, he pointed out the one man who cuts down Trump better than anyone: Donald Trump.
This idea has been a popular one ever since President Trump took office. A big part of it has been his Twitter account, which he considers the best way to speak directly to Americans. The problem is that he has a history of tweeting out opinions that later contradict what he’s doing now. There are Reddit subs and Twitter feeds that track all of it.
But if you subscribe to the old saying that “actions speak louder than words,” or in this case tweets, then President Trump has that covered as well. His actions immediately following declaring a national emergency were the starting point for Seth Meyers’ latest segment of “A Closer Look.”
Golf has to be second only to Twitter on the list of things most Americans would like to see Trump cut back on, at least as far as things outside of his political duties go. It’s been a popular topic for late night hosts to hit on during the president’s tenure. It’s even worse when he’s consistently golfing at his own properties.
Meyers went on to cover Trump’s press conference announcing the national emergency. Like Stephen Colbert, Meyers had trouble making sense of the president’s ramblings. The sing-song voice he used ultimately proved he wasn’t viewing the border situation as a real emergency according to Meyers.
Perhaps a serious and solemn Trump at the announcement followed by reports of him diligently working at the White House would have been a better strategy convincing anyone of the emergency. But for Meyers, this was never a realistic response from the “grandpa” president.
As Seth Meyers pointed out, it’s hard to take serious a national emergency declaration that also included praise of Rush Limbaugh and President Trump boasting about a Nobel Peace Prize nomination that he requested. It doesn’t look good for the wall’s chances of actually being built and part of that blame certainly goes to the president for tearing down any possibility.
