Late Night with Seth Meyers

Late Night with Seth Meyers used the show’s most popular segment, “A Closer Look,” to examine Donald Trump’s State of the Union. These pieces have become more frequent as more and more big picture stories come out of the White House.

Meyers’s approach is different than Jimmy Fallon’s as the Late Night host tries to insert some information and analysis around his jokes. For better or worse, a lot of Americans are getting their news from late night. It’s hosts like Meyers that are leading the charge with clips like this designed to add context to the jokes.

At the same time, Meyers isn’t afraid to use juvenile or low-brow humor while breaking down the State of the Union. Inside the first couple minutes, he compares Donald Trump to a crazy guy on the train and questions the president’s intelligence.

Meyers examines all of the build up to the State of the Union like an analyst recapping the season before the Super Bowl. We get to see highlights like Trump’s medieval wall rant and applause from Fox News hosts. Meyers sets the table for the audience in a way that shows us how we got here and why Donald Trump hit on his favorite topics during the State of the Union.

Best line: “Trump is so unpopular even his tie has moved to the left.” A classic Seth Meyers zing that leaves the president burnt.
