The Late Show will air live after the State of the Union and Stephen Colbert has some thoughts on President Trump’s theme.

President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address will finally happen tonight after much controversy and delay. The government shutdown and tension between Trump and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi have made the speech of particular interest this year. Always one to chime in on everything Trump, Stephen Colbert offered a preview of tonight’s address.

The Late Show has been keeping track of all the drama surrounding the State of the Union. Colbert has covered the clash between Trump and Pelosi  prior to the shutdown as well as what ultimately led to the address being temporarily cancelled.

The government shutdown has been resolved (for now) and Pelosi extended the invitation to President Trump to deliver his speech in the House Chamber. Trump’s announced themes of “Choosing Greatness” and “unity” for tonight’s State of the Union has already turned some heads. Bringing people together hasn’t exactly been Trump’s main focus since taking office. Stephen Colbert offered some alternatives while previewing the speech.

We should at least give President Trump the chance to deliver his speech before we rush to judgment on it. But Stephen Colbert isn’t like the rest of us and it’s his job on The Late Show to dissect the news in real time and find the humor in it. And he’s the best at doing just that.

Colbert does a clever job of flipping Trump’s call for unity on its head. Maybe he is bringing people together after all. Unfortunately for the president, it is in opposition to him that people are rallying together at a growing rate.
