Is Saturday Night Live new tonight Dec. 29?
By Matt Moore
Now that Christmas has come and gone, can we expect Saturday Night Live to return to regularly scheduled programming?
Congratulations, you survived another holiday season. That is, unless you have some major New Year’s Eve plans lined up. Whether you’re looking to unwind or keep the party going, Saturday Night Live can usually provide what you need.
The show certainly did that during the weeks leading up to Christmas. We were treated to plenty of holiday-themed sketches during shows hosted by Jason Momoa and Matt Damon. NBC aired a holiday special highlighting some of the show’s best sketches. And Last Night On even complied five of the greatest Christmas sketches of all-time.
Yet it remains the regular, week-to-week episodes of Saturday Night Live that make the show so popular. It’s part of the reason why the show has some of the most dedicated and loyal fans in television.
So now that the holidays are over and Christmas has come and gone, can we expect to see an all new episode of Saturday Night Live tonight? Unfortunately, no we will not. The show took a break this week to give a much deserved break to the cast, writers, and crew.
It will be interesting to see where the show places its focus when it does return in January 2019. It has faced some criticism for relying too heavily on attacking President Trump and using surprise guest stars to portray those involved with the president.
For the second half of the season, the show could decide to emphasize more original content and sketch ideas. It seems in need of a new character that grabs viewers’ attention and keeps the discussion off the private lives of cast members.
Whether or not that happens will depend on the ratings and the headlines. If things start to slip too far, then NBC may want some level of course correction. But if President Trump continues to make headlines, it will be impossible for Saturday Night Live to ignore it considering it typically results in the show’s best bits. Whatever happens in 2019, Last Night On will continue to have it all covered.
