Ranking Will Ferrell’s Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts performance
By Matt Moore
Will Ferrell put on perhaps the best performance in the history of the Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts game on the Late Late Show with James Corden.
Will Ferrell has always been one of the best guests in late night dating all the way back to his days on Saturday Night Live. Rarely does he play things straight and instead prefers to come out in character or have a running bit throughout the interview. So perhaps that is why he chose not to answer any of James Corden’s questions honestly during “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts” on The Late Late Show.
Ferrell chose not to identify the Saturday Night Live host that was most difficult to work with when questioned by Corden. Ferrell was on the show for seven years so he had to collaborate with hundreds of hosts in that period. But rather than throw anyone under the bus or make headlines for the wrong reasons, Ferrell opted not to answer. For what it’s worth,Steven Seagal is regularly considered one of the worst hosts in SNL history by Lorne Michaels and David Spade.
If you haven’t seen it already, you can watch Ferrell’s full performance in “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts.” He avoids questions about his least favorite movie he’s done and which actor he would work with again out of Mark Wahlberg, John C. Reilly, and Mel Gibson.
It was certainly an impressive display by the Holmes and Watson star. Clearly Ferrell has a steel stomach as only the fish eyes seemed to bother the actor enough to the point he couldn’t swallow it. So where does Will Ferrell’s edition of “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts” rank among some of the show’s best? Ferrell come close but he doesn’t beat the all-time performance by Jimmy Kimmel.
Kimmel helped himself to some of the “food” before the game even began. It told Corden everything he needed to know about how things were going to go. Kimmel is typically candid and hasn’t had any problem expressing his thoughts in the past but he understood that the game is just as enjoyable if the people playing are eating rather than answering.
Ferrell’s edition of the game may also have to come in behind Gordon Ramsay in the rankings. The chef has had his fair share of foul meals while judging the creations of other chefs. But none of that prepared him for what James Corden had prepared.
We are going to give Will Ferrell the nod over one of the more popular editions of “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts.” Reality megastar Kim Kardashian sat down across from Corden last year for her turn. Two of her sisters and her mother have also played the game. But Kim Kardashian always brings attention to anything she does and her answers, or lack of answers, propelled her turn as one of the best in the show’s history.
So there you have it. Will Ferrell ranks just behind Jimmy Kimmel and Gordon Ramsay and ahead of Kim Kardashian as the best performers in “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts.” That’s not a bad lineup of success stories for The Late Late Show with James Corden as the show continues to look for original games for guests to play. The more stars like Ferrell raise the bar, the more fun Corden and the fans will have.
