Dad’s New Girlfriend, Season 27 (2001)

This sketch from 2001 probably isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. For a show on NBC, it’s a little dark. For a Christmas sketch, it’s very dark. But it shows that the writers at Saturday Night Live have never really been afraid to go after what they think is funny regardless of the host or the occasion.

Thinking about the Ellen DeGeneres of 2018 makes it hard to picture her doing a sketch like this now. Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler, and Seth Meyers may not have any trouble revisiting this type of comedy, however.

Reading the YouTube comments of this sketch in 2018 shows that a lot of people found it dark and depressing. Again, this isn’t everyone’s type of comedy especially when it comes to Christmas time. But you have to appreciate Will Ferrell’s dedication. There was something about when he wore that mustache that made you know a classic sketch was coming.
