New Rule: Married to the Mob, May 11

In this “New Rule” segment, Bill Maher addresses one of the most confusing aspects of the 2016 presidential election: how did a New York City millionaire convince lower- and middle-class Americans in the heartland that he cared about them?

President Trump has always, always made a point to remind people about how much money he has. About how great New York City is to grow up, live, and develop. He loves being around celebrities and always has. Yet a large population of the country thought that he understood their daily lives better than any other candidate.

Maher questions this in his own special way by attacking the New York stereotypes demonstrated by Trump, his son, and lawyer Michael Cohen. Remember, this was back in May when Cohen was still loyal the president. And when “The Mooch” was still a thing. But Cohen has had a change of heart regarding his dedication to Team Trump. Not so much loyalty these days.

The mob parallel used by Maher to describe why so many in the heartland voted for Trump is funny but also sadly very close to the truth. With more and more stories coming out about payoffs, shell corporations, and cover-ups, it’s hard to consider Maher’s monologue as hyperbole.
