Stephen Colbert explains how the White House is at ‘peak insanity’

Coming out of the midterm elections, President Trump’s White House is reportedly crazier than ever. That news had Stephen Colbert questioning just how insane things have become.

Not many people could believe it when Donald Trump was elected president in 2016. To go from hosting The Apprentice to hosting foreign dignitaries in the White House seemed too outlandish of an idea for most to comprehend. But that is the reality and things have only become harder to believe since then. Just ask Stephen Colbert.

As we pass the midway point of Trump’s first term in office, it feels like every day brings a new headline that leaves many people scratching their heads. The press can struggle to keep pace with every leak and report that comes from the Trump administration. Now we’re seeing late night hosts, typically used to the absurd, having a hard time wrapping their heads around it all.

Recently Jimmy Kimmel reached a breaking point with Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders after she tweeted a doctored video of CNN reporter Jim Acosta. Kimmel called for Sanders to be fired over the tweet. Acosta’s clash with Trump during a press conference was the latest in a string of questionable activities from the White House. Stephen Colbert picked things up from there on last night’s Late Show.

“Furious” and “pissed” are baseline descriptors of the president’s mood if his Twitter account is any indication. As Colbert points out, the president has taken to his trusty social media platform to once again remind us that lifelong Republican Robert Mueller is actually an angry Democrat and that the witch hunt against Trump is far greater than the actual witch hunts.

If the Vanity Fair report is to believed, then Trump’s rage and isolation are the result of a few different factors. The big ones are losing the House to Democrats, possible indictments against his son Don Jr., and Democrats furthering the investigation into Trump’s background. So basically things are getting difficult for President Trump and he doesn’t like it.

It is surprising that this is what it took for staffers at the White House to speak up and claim that the insanity level is at an all-time high. So not when Anthony Scaramucci was running press briefings? Not when Stormy Daniels spoke out about the affair? Not when Kid Rock and Ted Nugent were hanging out in the Oval Office? Yikes.

The normal workings of politics like losing the majority in the House of Representatives are now enough to bring insanity to the White House. The mere possibility of legal action or increased scrutiny against Trump and his family are enough to put him on edge. What will happen when and if those things become reality? The insanity may not have peaked after all.
