Stephen Colbert didn’t hold anything back when calling out the 20-year old Trump fanatic behind a made up company accusing Robert Mueller of assault.

It is getting to the point where saying “nothing is shocking anymore” is becoming too cliche. But we find ourselves in that territory again today due to a Twitter troll looking to discredit Robert Mueller. To use another cliche, taking down this half-baked plot was like shooting fish in a barrel for Stephen Colbert.

On last night’s Late Show Colbert followed the lead of many journalists and observers who easily disproved the source of sexual assault allegations against Mueller. The first red flag was that the news was  coming from right-wing conspiracy theorist Jack Burkman.

The next problem was the so-called “counter intelligence” agency that was conducting the background check on these allegations. That company, Surefire Intelligence, was only incorporated weeks ago. It’s website claimed offices that don’t exist and the Linkedin profiles of employees either used celebrities or stock photos as headshots.

A very basic look into the company found emails registered to on Jacob Wohl. If you’re not familiar with Wohl then consider yourself lucky. It is most active on Twitter, responding to President Trump’s every tweet and getting the occasional retweet from the president. Let Colbert pick up things from here:

It is frustrating that this was able to get enough traction to warrant a response. But it is difficult not to point out the severe lack of intelligence or awareness that went into this by Wohl and Burkman. Even more problematic is how the stunt is symptomatic of the political environment and what tries to pass as discourse. That we even know who Wohl is demonstrates the increasingly negative side effects of social media.

Every late night host took a shot at this story but Colbert does it better than anyone. These type of stories that let people expose their own stupidity or hypocrisy are his specialty. If you watched any of Burkman and Wohl’s press conference then you saw a colossal waste of time that will likely be more problematic for the pair than anything that comes out against Mueller. When that happens, Colbert will be ready and waiting.
