Stephen Colbert wants to know what is scaring Donald Trump
By Matt Moore
President Donald Trump can’t seem to keep his story straight about the caravan of migrants coming the U.S. border so Stephen Colbert tried to get to the bottom of it.
Stop me if you’ve heard this before: President Trump contradicted himself and Stephen Colbert called him out on the Late Show. It is only repetitive because the president keeps giving Colbert and his late night colleagues the material to do so.
Recently it has been Seth Meyers ripping Trump for his attacks on the media after the president called for civility following the bomb scare. Then Colbert mocked the president’s memory loss on tariffs.
On last night’s episode of The Late Show, Colbert went after Trump for his comments on the caravan story. If you’re unfamiliar with it, it is probably best to do a little research and read up on the situation. The main point is that migrants are traveling through Central America to Mexico with plans to cross the U.S. border. Trump does not want that to happen.
The reasons why Trump is so eager to stop the caravan have varied. Yes, there is the issue of illegal immigration and not letting illegal border crossings occur. That isn’t enough for Trump who likes to do what amounts to fear mongering. You see, the caravan is full of violent gang members who must be stopped. Or is it full of sickly, disease ridden people barely surviving? Colbert asked that very question:
Just in time for Halloween, Trump has revealed his fear of the young, strong men barreling towards the border and ready to wreak havoc. But it is Trump’s supporters and cable news talking heads have a different sense of dread. To them, these people are walking viruses who will spread diseases that haven’t been seen in years…because they were eradicated.
This shows that it is nearly impossible to have a nuanced discussion about these kind of issues. It is made even harder by the fact that elections are just days away. If you want to feel safe, vote for the party that will keep the strong gang members/diseased migrants out of the country. That seems to be the message, right? It’s not that simple unfortunately.
