During his latest Closer Look segment Seth Meyers explained why President Trump hasn’t exactly helped when it comes to changing political discourse.

The investigation into who sent explosives to a number of high profile individuals including former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Senator Maxine Waters continues. It’s an important story that will dominate the headlines so it’s no surprise that it was a topic for late night hosts.

On CBS, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert offered a sketch of the possible person responsible for mailing the pipe bombs. Colbert also focused on the bombs sent to the CNN headquarters in New York City and how the network covered the incident.

When these type of stories come up, nobody has covered them better than Seth Meyers and the writers over at Late Night. It took a while for the show to hit its stride but keeping Meyers behind the desk and using an approach similar to Weekend Update has been a smart move. This is best displayed during “A Closer Look,” the best recurring segment from Meyers.

Here’s “A Closer Look” from the Oct. 24 show that let Meyers point out just how President Trump has contradicted himself when it comes to rhetoric and how it ties into the bombs sent to many of his critics and political opponents:

The point about Trump piggybacking Vice President Mike Pence’s statement is spot on. It seems like Trump struggles to come out with a quick and direct condemnation of things that everyone else understands as bad. He has no hesitation tweeting his thoughts on topics like Saturday Night Live, Jemele Hill, or Robert De Niro. Yet he can’t seem to come up with his own thoughts on why people shouldn’t be getting bombs in the mail.

Meyers goes on to point out that Trump celebrated a Montana candidate’s physical attack on a reporter. It sets a bad precedent if the leader of the country can point to such behavior as a positive. Trump does not have to be “politically correct” all the time. But he does need to understand the impact of what he says on those so heavily influenced by his every word. Maybe try not saying anything?

That leads nicely into the next topic Meyers examines. The caravan story has been overblown by both sides. What should be a nonstory is made out to be some insane national threat yet here we have people already inside the country mailing bombs. Late Night points out that Trump does not know what he’s talking about. Again, maybe try not saying anything?

The more information that comes out on the bombs sent in the mail, the more chances President Trump will have to issue a statement. Hopefully when he has all the facts, he can offer something of substance. If not, give Mike Pence a follow on Twitter.
