Bob Odenkirk didn’t think Saul would survive Breaking Bad

Better Call Saul may have begun its fourth season, but its star Bob Odenkirk told Conan O’Brien he was certain Saul was going to die on Breaking Bad.

For anyone to make it to the end of Breaking Bad alive is pretty impressive, so we’re not blaming him!

Last night on Conan on TBS, Better Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk stopped by to talk about the show. The acclaimed series is a prequel show to AMC’s Breaking Bad, which ran for five brutal seasons. Odenkirk’s Saul Goodman character got into quite a bit of trouble on that series, but managed to make it to the end where it was revealed he was skipping town with a new identity.

For Odenkirk, however, playing the character during Breaking Bad‘s run meant constantly worrying about Saul’s demise. “i thought I was created to die,” Odenkirk explains, never picturing the role would go on to have the success it’s currently enjoying. “I opened every script of Breaking Bad thinking, this is my time,” he goes on to explain, saying his character would have been a great one to kill off without impacting the main story too much.

The two marvel at just how you can’t predict anything. With Breaking Bad long over, the mantle has now fallen to Saul to keep this universe going. Those watching Better Call Saul know that Season 4 is already the most intense yet, and the show is more in line with its parent series than ever before. Hopefully, by the time Better Call Saul is all said and done, Saul Goodman will still be breathing.
