Given the “excuse” Donald Trump has given about what happened during his summit meeting with Putin, Stephen Colbert is astonished he thinks we’re that dumb.

Couldn’t agree with Stephen Colbert any more on this one…

Certainly, you’re aware of the big story about what happened with Donald Trump and Russia, but I’ll go through a quick recap anyway. During their summit meeting together, Trump refused to say anything even slightly negative about Putin, going so far as to say he doesn’t see any reason why Russia would interfere in the election.

After some well-deserved backlash, Trump is of course backpedaling on those remarks. He is now seriously trying to convince everyone that he merely flubbed his words — he meant to say “wouldn’t” when he said the word “would.” While many of us have come to expect Trump to lie about virtually everything he says, this is by far the worst excuse for a lie he’s told yet.

“Let’s see how dumb you think the American people are,” Colbert said on his late night show when playing the footage. Colbert goes on to lament how ridiculous it is for Trump to just “add a word in” to what he said later when he the response to it is negative. Presumably, as Colbert suggests, Trump will later say that he meant to say “respect her by the p***y” on that Access Hollywood bus. It sounds ridiculous, but no more ridiculous than this would/wouldn’t excuse.

Whatever Trump tries to walk back next, Colbert will be there to respond. There’s certainly never a shortage of material that the president leaves the late night comedian to work with! As always, be sure to tune in weeknights at 11:35 p.m. EST on CBS when The Late Show with Stephen Colbert airs!
