Real Time’s Bill Maher spoke about the controversy surrounding his wish that the country would enter a recession if it meant getting rid of Donald Trump.

A couple of weeks back, Bill Maher ruffled some feathers (as he is wont to do) with some harsh comments about Donald Trump. This time, Maher suggested that seeing the United States fall into a financial recession would actually be a good thing. Perhaps then, everyone would finally open their eyes about Trump and make the necessary steps to get him out of the Oval Office.

As you can expect, many people were offended by these statements. It was easy for some to say how Maher is actually wishing for a recession. Oh, how awful! So, was Maher going to apologize for these comments after the controversy? Not at all… in fact, he took to Real Time to repeat what he said and elaborate on why he meant it.

“A recession is a survivable event; what Trump is doing to this country is not,” Maher explains. He tells viewers that every Republican president since Theodore Roosevelt saw a recession during their time in office. Total, the country has withstood nearly 50 recessions, and we can’t seem to go a decade without one.

“Another recession is coming, not because I’m rooting for it,” Maher explains, “but because someone passed a giant tax giveaway to the rich that added trillions to the debt. And started a trade war for no reason. And deliberately sabotaged the affordable care act. And rolled back the rules for banks so they can once again gamble with our money.”

Maher knows the country can survive a recession, so if that’s what it takes for Trump to not be so “cute” to his supporters anymore, Maher says to bring it on. You can watch this segment in the YouTube video below.

Maher certainly doesn’t always make people happy with the things he says on his show. But one thing we can say about Maher is that he means what he says and he sticks with  it. For more, tune in when Real Time with Bill Maher airs Fridays at 10 PM on HBO.
