President Donald Trump appears to have put on the tinfoil hat with the implausible conspiracy theory he’s pushing, so Stephen Colbert had to shut it down.

“Nice try, Deep State!”

There’s a certain irony in Donald Trump saying every single news report that comes out about him is “fake news.” If you look a little closer, you’ll see that Trump himself perpetuates false reports. And now, it’s even going to the point where the president is literally looking more like a looney conspiracy theorist.

Last night on The Late Show, host Stephen Colbert brought up how Trump is referring to an informant in his campaign as “a nest of spies.” In a theory that’s now being referred to by some as “Spygate”, Trump insists there’s a very serious problem with spies, though see it as completely insane. According to CNN, Trump has taken a small rumor and turned it into a full-blown conspiracy theory in just a matter of days.

As for the term Spygate, Colbert isn’t a fan. For one, the term has already been used twice before. And Colbert also points out that someone investigating Trump isn’t a spy. So, if anything, we should be calling this Investigate-gate.

You can watch the monologue in the YouTube video below.

What will happen next in this so-called “spy theory?” I supposed we will just have to wait and see, but Colbert will surely fill us in. Tune in when The Late Show with Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. EST on CBS!
