Bill Maher pressures Democrats to push for marijuana legalization
By Jeremy Dick
On the 4/20 edition of Real Time with Bill Maher, a New Rule calls for Democrats to use marijuana legalization to help them win the upcoming elections.
I suppose it was the perfect day for Bill Maher to present this new rule…
Last night on Real Time With Bill Maher, Maher spoke about the Democrats’ need to come up with a wedge issue to help them win their upcoming elections. Being that yesterday was 4/20, it was the perfect time for Maher to suggest a perfect one for them: marijuana legalization. Given the growing support for decriminalization, it’s an issue that could give Democrats leverage if they embrace it.
Maher brings up the recent story about John Boehner taking a new gig with the largest legal pot grower in the company. Though Boehner used to say he was staunchly against decriminalization, he now says he’s “evolved.” Or as Maher points out, it rather seems that now Republicans can “smell the money” in legalizing, so Democrats need to be careful about not losing on this issue.
Speaking about the midterm elections, Maher brings up how people are claiming there will be a “blue wave” of Democrat victories. Maher warns that these elections are not quite as in the bag as everyone thinks, since voter turnout on the left is often disappointing. They need a “sweetener” to help get some of the stragglers to show up, and a pro-pot platform could do the trick. Maher mentions how Republicans always claim how the other side is coming to take their guns, so Democrats need to treat pot that way, and “turn potheads into single issue voters too.”

At this point, marijuana legalization in the United States seems inevitable. We’re seeing more and more politicians slowly embracing it and it’s becoming just a matter of time.
