Oscars 2018: Stephen Colbert doesn’t know what to be mad about
By Jeremy Dick
There doesn’t seem to be any major snubs for the 2018 Oscars, and Stephen Colbert is wondering what we should all be getting mad about this year.
It’s not #OscarsSoWhite this year, so is there anything else we can use to protest the event?
Last night, Stephen Colbert brought up this very topic on The Late Show. With the Oscars coming up, Colbert notes the apparent lack of any major snubs. The Oscars are more diverse than ever, which includes Mexican director Guillermo del Toro snagging 13 nominations for The Shape of Water. Colbert can’t help but joke that the film about a woman having sex with a disgusting fish monster is essentially The Stormy Daniels Story.
Jordan Peele is also up for Best Director for Get Out, making him only the fifth black person ever to have the honor. Of course, now this means that a group of rich white people will invite Peele to a private party. “I hope he’s seen Get Out,” Colbert quips.
Up against Peele is Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird. Similar to Peele, Gerwig is only the fifth woman in history to be up for the Best Director Oscar. Colbert says that it will be interesting to see who wins, because “that will determine which group of Twitter users will become enraged.”
