Emmys: Stephen Colbert says Donald Trump is TV’s biggest star
By Jeremy Dick
Host of CBS’ Late Show and Sunday night’s Primetime Emmy Awards, Stephen Colbert, says that there’s just no way to avoid talking about Donald Trump.
Stephen Colbert may be the king of late night TV and he’s about to host this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards… but according to him, he’s still not the TV star of the year… Donald Trump is!
Ahead of this Sunday’s big event, Colbert spoke to Variety about the latest goings-on in his career. He opens up on being apprehensive about hosting the live show, knowing that if he ever flubs something on Late Show, it can always be redone. It’s an interesting interview, and I encourage you to read it in its entirety.
What stands out though are Colbert’s comments on the focus on politics on The Late Show. Colbert insists that his monologues are not political, they just happen to go that way because that’s just been the big story this year. As he says in the interview:
"“The biggest story of the year is not ‘Westworld.’ It’s not ‘The Handmaid’s Tale.’ It’s not Milo Ventimiglia’s luscious abs. That’s not what we cared about,” he says. “The biggest TV star of the year is Donald Trump.”"
Colbert is just giving his audience what they want. And you can’t argue with results. As it stands, Colbert is the highest-rated late night comedian. The man knows what he is doing, and that’s why he’s where he’s at.
The 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards airs on Sunday, September 17, at 8 PM EST on CBS.
