8. Bill Maher makes an entire movie challenging religion

Just in case you weren’t aware of how anti-religion Bill Maher is, he really proves the point with Religulous. That’s the name of a 2008 documentary film made by Maher, in which he tackles the concept of religion head on. Maher writes, produces, and stars in the movie, with Borat director Larry Charles directing.

In the film, Maher travels to various religious destinations to conduct interviews with followers of all kinds of different religions. This includes going to Jerusalem, the Vatican, and Salt Lake City. Maher obtained the interviews by giving those he talked to a fake title of the movie, later mocking them and their religions in the completed film.

Some people praised the film for promoting positive thinking, and educating them on the various religions of the world. Roger Ebert even gave the movie a high rating, suggesting that people should just “tune out” when their personal religion was put on blast, but laugh at the other ones being lambasted. But as you could expect, it came under a lot of controversial criticism as well from various religious groups. Many people who are religious felt that the film definitely crossed a line.
