The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is reportedly going to try and get more political to fight off The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s rising ratings.

Anyone who regularly follows the late night talk show industry knows that The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is arguably one of the least political late night shows on the air. However, that could be changing in the near future.

Since President Donald Trump was sworn into office, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert has been the king of late night TV, beating out The Tonight Show in ratings for five straight weeks. This is the first period of time Colbert has beaten out Fallon since the former Comedy Central host first took over for David Letterman.

Now, according to Carlos Greer from Page Six, Fallon is feeling the pressure to get more political and take more shots at Trump.

“[Fallon] is feeling the pressure. I mean, Stephen Colbert is now beating him in a big way and he has to change his format to keep up because he’s losing viewers,” a source reportedly told Greer. “They had to figure out a way to get Trump [into his routine] because he’s too weak on Trump, and viewers are going elsewhere. [He’s been] uncomfortable talking about politics, and that’s not what the people want.”

It’s not secret that Fallon has shied away from politics on The Tonight Show. He’s much more focused on playing games with his guests, although he has done his Trump impersonation from time to time.

Having said that, if The Tonight Show is going to try and get more political to fight with The Late Show, it’s going to be tough. Colbert has been bringing the heat lately, and it’s unlikely that Fallon will be able to deliver the same kind of hard-hitting jokes.
