John Oliver travels to India, speaks with Dalai Lama on Last Week Tonight
By Tyler Brooke
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver took a little field trip this week, with the crew traveling to India to talk with the Dalai Lama about Tibet this week.
While the vast majority of this season of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has been focused on President Donald Trump, the HBO series decided to take a deep dive into one of the more influential figures in the world this week.
On Sunday night’s episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver talked about the Dalai Lama, or as he called it, “a man so enlightened that he was the world’s original ‘woke bae'”. During the segment, Oliver talked about the Dalai Lama and the conflict between Tibet and China.
In fact, many may not know that the Dalai Lama is actually banned from China and hasn’t returned to Tibet in decades. There’s also a major issue with the Panchen Lama, because the one who the Dalai Lama selected at six years old was arrested by the Chinese government while China appointed its own Panchen Lama.
It’s all a very serious and complicated religious issue, so in a rare event, Oliver traveled to India to speak with the Dalai Lama for Last Week Tonight. You can watch the entire interview and segment on Tibet in the YouTube video below.
Despite how serious the situation is, the Dalai Lama was actually a pretty humorous and light hearted person to talk to for Oliver. He was quite cheerful and provided some incredible answers to some of Oliver’s questions.

It was a pretty different subject matter for Last Week Tonight, but Oliver’s interview with the Dalai Lama may have made this one of the most entertaining episodes the HBO series has ever had. Hopefully Oliver can travel for some other interviews in the near future.
