25. Raymond Burr refuses to go on Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show

Johnny Carson was never afraid to push the envelope a little bit on The Tonight Show. It’s what made him become one of the very best late night hosts if all time. Carson knew how to be funny, even if it sometimes came at the expense of others. That is, of course, what comedians do— but not everyone likes being the butt of the joke.

Legendary actor Raymond Burr was one such person. During monologues on The Tonight Show, Carson began to make “fat jokes” about Burr’s weight. This infuriated Burr, who later revealed to US Weekly he refused to go on the program because of it. Here’s what he said to the publication:

"“I have been asked a number of times to do his show and I won’t do it. Because I like NBC. He’s doing an NBC show. If I went on I’d have some things to say, not just about the bad jokes he’s done about me, but bad jokes he does about everybody who can’t fight back because they aren’t there. And that wouldn’t be good for NBC.”"

Burr may be the one to publicly talk about boycotting the show because of jokes they made about him. But he’s probably far from the only one.
