HBO aired the season finale of Westworld tonight, and we have a lot to talk about over the next few months.

After a stunning first season, one that was much more successful than anyone though, Westworld has come to a close. The series will be back next year, which might be a good amount of time to decompress in.

It’s been a constant struggle to establish timelines on the show, which has really become the main theme of the first season. There’s a whole story of android revolt brewing but none of that is above the theories that have made the show what it is. Whether or not William and The Man in Black are the same person is a theory that has fueled interest in the first season, but the show is so much more than that.

So before we get too far ahead of ourselves in speculating about the second season of the show, let’s take a look back at the first season finale and what exactly the hell happened.

Arnold Programmed Delores to Purge Hosts

This one was something we could probably figure, but it was nice to have it confirmed. Arnold initially programmed the maze inside of Delores so that she could find consciousness. That’s why we’ve been hearing his voice inside her head all season long.

We sort of knew that, but what we didn’t know was that the reward for figuring out the maze was purging the rest of the hosts. It was revealed that Arnold programmed Delores to wipe out the other hosts in some great purge of Westworld. She was told to enlist the host of Teddy to help. Hence, the Wyatt massacre that we’ve been trying to unravel this whole season.
