Mary-Louise Parker (South Carolina)

Although actress Mary-Louise Parker earned her degree in theater in North Carolina, she’s originally from southern Carolina. Upon completing her education she would move to New York for an acting career. It wasn’t long after that for small roles and Broadway spots to start falling into her lap.

By the time Parker was cast as the lead character Nancy Botwin on the Showtime series Weeds, she had a plethora of smaller roles under her belt. It was the Weeds role that really boosted her popularity, however. On the series, she plays a struggling widow and mother who turns to sell marijuana to support her family. It’s a well-written series truly brought to life by Parker, who makes the character feel real and easy to relate to.

For her role as Nancy Botwin, Parker won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in 2006. When the popular series finally came to a close, she would continue her work in film, on TV, and on Broadway. Notably, she appears in an HBO adaptation mini-series of the Broadway show Angels in America. Her performances in this earned her additional award wins, including both a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy Award.
