28. Taking on the TRAP laws against legal abortion

The subject of abortion has for many years been a hot button issue with Democrats and Republicans. One side argues that women should have the right to choose, without the government making medical decisions about their bodies for them. Others consider it to be an act of murder, and there are more who fall somewhere in between.

But no matter what people might feel about abortion, it is technically legal. But in their effort to halt legal abortions from taking place as much as possible, Republican politicians have made the process very difficult in many states. New regulations imposed in places like Utah and Mississippi have resulted in those states having only one available abortion clinic.

John Oliver tackled this issue head on on Last Week Tonight, really showing how ridiculous it all was. Making the decisions based on “women’s health”, politicians have developed TRAP laws (Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers). But the biggest problem with that is that legal abortion has a mortality rate of .00073%.

Using cute sloths as props to further demonstrate his point, Oliver succeeded in bringing more awareness to this controversial issue. After telling his viewers about this depressing problem, Oliver even brought out a sloth onto his desk to give people a better image to fall asleep with.
