James Corden mocks Jill Stein’s Harambe tweet on The Late Late Show

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump may be getting all the attention this election season, but there are also two other candidates running for president: Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson and Jill Stein of the Green Party. Unsurprisingly, the third-party candidates haven’t had much of a presence on late-night TV save for a few interviews Johnson did on some of the politically oriented shows like Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and Real Time with Bill Maher, as well as a segment on The Daily Show. But on Wednesday’s episode of The Late Late Show, host James Corden dedicated a good portion of his monologue to Stein’s unusual campaign strategies.
Like his lead-in Stephen Colbert, the British comedian began his show by ridiculing Trump’s visit to Mexico, particularly the disagreement over whether he discussed the payment of his propsed wall with the country’s president, Enrique Pena Nieto, as well as his running mate Mike Pence’s vague details on Trump’s immigration plan.
Talked then turned to Stein, who the host explained was an option for voters “feeling frustrated with Trump’s Mexico antics,” but who aren’t “quite sold on Hillary Clinton.”
“Now if you don’t know who Jill Stein is, just picture Bernie Sanders, and now picture the woman in the back of the rally selling dream catchers,” he joked.
He then mocked her attempt to connect with millennial voters via social media by recently tweeting about Harambe, the gorilla who was put down by the Cleveland Zoo after a child fell into his enclosure. It read:
He then highlighted some of the incredulous responses:
“And that was just from her two children,” Corden added.
He continued, “Lots of people have been saying repeatedly we need a third party option. And after seeing Jill Stein’s Harambe tweet they were probably like, ‘We could probably use a fourth party option.'”
He then noted that Stein was running behind Harambe in one national poll even though he’s not a presidential candidate, nor is he alive. Corden continued to rib Stein for pandering to young voters, joking that she announced her labor policy using a Minions meme, changed her campaign slogan to “Netflix and Jill,” and selected Chewbacca Mom as her running mate.

Although Stein, who failed to make the ballot in all 50 states, is polling in single digits, lagging several points behind Johnson, there is growing public support for the two third-party candidates to appear onstage during the upcoming presidential debates. However, it currently looks unlikely that either candidate will reach the 15% threshold that’s required to earn a spot.
The Late Late Show with James Corden airs Monday-Thursday at 12:35 a.m. on CBS.
