Bill Murray (Illinois)

Bill Murray is one of the funniest comedians of all-time. You’ll be hard-pressed to find anybody out there who disagrees with that sentiment. From his iconic role as Peter Venkman in the Ghostbusters movies to playing himself in the funniest scene in Zombieland, there’s never been a time when Murray has failed to entertain. But it all had to start from somewhere.

Growing up in Wilmette, a northern suburb of Chicago, Murray always saw himself as an entertainer. In high school, he was the lead singer of a rock band called the Dutch Masters, while also taking part in school and community theater. When going to college in Colorado didn’t work out, Murray briefly returned to Illinois before then venturing out to New York to figure out what to do with his life.

Soon after arriving in the Big Apple, Murray was already getting television work. Lucking out, Murray was able to join Saturday Night Live during its second season, and would serve on the show for three years. He was one of the funniest cast members of the time, and the only reason he wound up leaving was because his immense talent was better served in Hollywood.
