Garrett Morris (Louisiana)

Garrett Morris is a comedian hailing straight out of New Orleans, Louisiana, quickly gaining a passion for performing and music as a church choir singer. He would train at the Juilliard School of Music and performed with the Belafonte Folk Singers. That also led to appearing in several Broadway musicals and getting various roles on television.

What Morris is certainly best known for, however, is being one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live. Starting in 1975 and sticking around until 1980, Morris would sometimes sing classical music on the show, utilizing his passion for music as well as his desire to entertain. For those who’ve seen those first few seasons of the series, Morris was definitely one of the most memorable members.

Like many cast members from SNL, Morris had done plenty of celebrity impressions, spoofing some of the famous folks at the time like Chubby Checker, James Brown, and Richard Pryor. But perhaps his most well-known character would be the “News for the Hard of Hearing” translator, who would obnoxiously shout each line rather than utilizing sign language as a way of “interpreting” for the viewers.

These days, Morris is still making people laugh on the comedy series 2 Broke Girls.
