The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon Recap – 1/13
By Max Parker
It’s been an unbalanced week for Fallon and The Tonight Show so far. The week kicked off on a serious note when Jimmy welcomed Donald Trump. Then last night Jimmy hung out with the wildly funny Kevin Hart. Wednesday’s show keep the jokes coming from the day before with guests Danny DeVito and Khloe Kardashian.
Monologue
Jimmy kicked off the monologue with some chatter about last night’s State of the Union address. He pointed out that Obama got the biggest applause of the night when he said he was going to keep it short. He added a video bit that was a spoof on the end The Breakfast Club that freeze framed Obama, Biden, Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Kim Davis. It was an extremely brief monologue to make room for Danny DeVito and a game of charades.
Joke of the Monologue: Nothing to see here. It was mostly video gags that don’t translate well to the written word.
To the Desk
Obama Expressions
This is a bit Jimmy has done before. He shows a picture of Obama and puts funny captions in front of them. It’s a pretty simple, yet effective bit. Check out the video below.
Bob Dylan sings “Hotline Bling”
Immediately after the break, The Tonight Show returned with an excellent music bit of Jimmy singing “Hotline Bling” in the stylings of Bob Dylan. They even heavily produced the video to look like it was shot in the 60’s or 70’s. Jimmy was in costume playing the guitar and harmonica while singing along. I couldn’t tell if he was really playing the guitar or not. I thought it was still out of commission from his injury. It was a spot-on impression, which is usually the case with Jimmy’s impressions. Check out the segments below.
The Guests
Danny DeVito
Danny DeVito is always a hoot. It’s like he gets more energy the older he gets. The interview kicked off with the two of them talking about how great New York is. DeVito, a New York native, talked about how he used to sled in New York back in the day. He said he never thought he would leave New York, but he was doing a lot of off-broadway work and then wanted to do movies. That took him to California. Jimmy asked him about some of the actors he’s worked with. DeVito said Jack Nicholson was one of the best he’s worked with. Jimmy surprised him with a set picture from his past. Danny was genuinely surprised and touched by it. He asked to have it and requested that Jimmy sign it.
Charades
Danny DeVito joined by Chloe Kardashian faced off against Jimmy and special guest Norman Reedus in a game of Charades. It seemed like it was a musical-themed game of Charades as Danny got “Cheerleader” as his first word, and Jimmy got “Electric Slide.” Check out the clip below.
Khloe Kardashian
The Kardashian sister is on the show to promote her new health book called Strong Looks Better Naked. She says she’s been on a weight loss regimen for a long time, so it made sense to do a book. Khloe says she loves going to the gym and jumping on the stairs. She also promoted her new show called Cocktails with Khloe. She says it’s a drinking show that involves having fun with the guests.
