Yes, Elon Musk hated Dana Carvey's SNL impression of him
Elon Musk was already one of the most controversial hosts in Saturday Night Live history when he took the stage in 2021. The last week, however, has managed to elevate this controversy. At this point he may very well be the most disliked host in the show's history, which is saying a lot.
Musk took to Twitter to voice his annoyance with SNL on November 10. Evidently, the Tesla founder watched the latest SNL episode, in which a parody version of himself appeared during the cold open. Dana Carvey played Musk, decked out in a suit and t-shirt and jumping foolishly, the way Musk has done at various campaign rallys.
Musk was disappointed with his SNL parody
Musk was not amused. He took to Twitter to criticize Carvey for his impression, claiming "Dana Carvey just sounds like Dana Carvey." In a vacuum, the criticism would have been cause for much controversy. Carvey, a legendary impressionist, did not do a particularly good job emulating Musk's distinct speaking voice.
The tweet set off a chain of events involving SNL cast member and fellow impressionist, Chloe Fineman. In a since-deleted TikTok post, Chloe Fineman called out Musk's criticism and put him on blast for being a terrible person during his hosting stint.
OK, I just saw some news article about Elon Musk being like butt-hurt about SNL and his impression, but I’m, like, you’re clearly watching the show," Fineman posited. She then cleared up a mystery that's been brewing online for months. Fellow cast member Bowen Yang claimed that one host made a cast member cry, but has refused to say who.
Chloe Fineman blasted Musk for his comments
Well, now we know:
"I’m gonna come out and say at long last that I’m the cast member that he made cry. And he’s the host that made someone cry. Maybe there’s others."
Fineman went on a lengthy tirade against the Tesla founder, and he fired back on Twitter by implying that very few of the planned sketches were actually funny. "It was only on the Thursday before the Saturday that ANY of the sketches generated laughs," the SpaceX founder wrote. "I was worried."
Lost in all this, of course, has been Dana Carvey's Musk impression. Since Carvey has seemingly taken a prominent role in Trump's administration, though, we can only assume that he will dust off his Musk for future episodes.
