Tom Holland currently sits firmly atop the entertainment world. And after delivering back-to-back blockbusters, the actor feels ready to take on Saturday Night Live. However, there is one tiny problem with Holland's plan.
Holland played a key supporting role in director Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, and then stood center stage for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Few actors have had the kind of summer Holland is experiencing, and with it comes all kinds of opportunities.
During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Holland revealed that he even told his studio's marketing team he wanted to host NBC's iconic sketch comedy series while promoting Spider-Man: Brand New Day. But the team had to let Holland know it wasn't an option since Saturday Night Live is off for the summer.
The topic of Holland hosting Saturday Night Live came up in response to the actor's appearance on Amy Poehler's podcast, Good Hang. Holland admitted that he's been asked to host the show in the past, but turned it down multiple times.
According to Holland, his dyslexia could present problems when it comes to reading lines off a cue card. The actor shared that reading aloud can be an issue, and he's concerned that he could freeze up while on stage in Studio 8H.
Both Poehler and Meyers did there best to encourage Holland to take the gig, and the actor admitted that he likes the idea of showing off his comedy chops. But the last-minute changes to sketches would only add to Holland's anxiety. Meyers took the opportunity to introduce Holland to Wally Feresten, who does the cue card for Saturday Night Live and Late Night.
Saturday Night Live returns for season 52 on September 28. That would give Holland and Saturday Night Live some time to work out a way to maximize Holland's success. And he also wouldn't be the first actor to be rewarded with hosting a season premiere after a giant summer.
But if Saturday Night Live is looking for someone connected to the same slate of major releases, there's another obvious choice. Zendaya may actually be the top choice to start the new season.
Like Holland, she appears in both The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. She also wrapped production on Euphoria this year and has Dune 3 on the horizon, giving her multiple high-profile projects to promote.
And if Zendaya gets the offer and accepts, that also leaves the door open for a Tom Holland cameo. That said, Holland's latest comments are the most encouraging sign yet that an SNL appearance may no longer be a matter of if, but when.
