Calls from First Lady Melania Trump and President Donald Trump to have Jimmy Kimmel removed from late-night television appear to have had the opposite of their intended effect. Instead of getting Jimmy Kimmel Live! off the air, the first couple deserves credit for driving a surge of attention toward the ABC host and his show.
Kimmel’s first monologue addressing the controversy on Monday night has quickly become one of the most-watched late-night clips of the year. The segment has racked up more than 5 million views on YouTube within just a few days. In fact, the show’s YouTube channel had not seen a video reach that level of popularity since early March, and only a handful of other monologue clips had crossed a similar view count in 2026 prior to this.
Rather than diminishing Kimmel’s platform, the backlash has amplified it. The renewed attention has also increased views of the comedian's mock White House Correspondents' Dinner bit that kicked everything off. The segment flew under the radar until MAGAsphere influencers gave it a second life in the wake of the real WHCD.
The fallout has extended beyond ratings and viral videos, too. The situation has created friction within the Republican Party, particularly as the Federal Communications Commission becomes entangled in discussions about media oversight. Some GOP lawmakers, included Senator Ted Cruz, have pushed back against the optics of targeting a network for what seems like political revenge. Fans have to imagine Kimmel gets some level of satisfaction out of seeing this unfold in the GOP.
Meanwhile, The Walt Disney Company has shown no signs of wavering in its support for Kimmel. The network’s continued backing sends a clear signal that this latest round of political pressure from the Trump adminsitration is not a threat to Kimmel's job.
The timing of the controversy may ultimately work in Kimmel’s favor. With The Late Show with Stephen Colbert set to conclude its run in the coming weeks, the late-night landscape is about to shift. Kimmel was already the obvious choice to capture a portion of that audience. Now, the Trumps have only put more attention on Jimmy Kimmel Live! with a story that shares similarities to what many fans believe happened between Stephen Colbert and Paramount.
Perhaps President Trump thought that timing would work in his favor. Colbert will go silent on May 21, taking out one of the most prominent White House critics on television. Drumming up some outrage over Kimmel could have theoretically removed another piece from the board. But all signs suggest it won't shake out that way, and Kimmel will ride a ratings wave.
President Trump has only double and tripled down on calling for ABC to fire Kimmel. The FCC seems poised to do what it can to apply pressure, even if it claims the president has no influence. But anyone worried about Jimmy Kimmel Live! should just look at how the week has played out and realize the late-night host will come out on top.
