Fans who missed The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last week are in for some good news. The NBC late-night show returns on Monday, giving it a chance to shine in the genre's new era.
Like its NBC partner Late Night with Seth Meyers, the long-running late-night franchise appeared to be taking an extended break around the Memorial Day holiday last week. But while fans are certainly happy to have Jimmy Fallon back on the air, his return comes at a fascinating moment for the entire late-night television industry.
For the first time in more than a decade, fans are adjusting to a late-night landscape without The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Stephen Colbert's departure has left behind a sizable audience accustomed to nightly political monologues, interviews with elected officials, and sharp commentary on the day's headlines.
But to be honest, that audience is unlikely to view Fallon as a direct replacement. Throughout his tenure as host, Fallon has largely avoided the deeply political approach embraced by Colbert, Meyers, and Jimmy Kimmel. Instead, The Tonight Show has built its identity around celebrity interviews, comedy games, viral sketches, and musical performances.
For some fans, that's exactly the appeal. Fallon has typically offered an alternative to the more commentary-driven style found elsewhere in late-night. His approach has helped The Tonight Show remain a broad entertainment program rather than a nightly political comedy act.
Still, the post-Colbert era presents an opportunity. With millions of former Late Show viewers potentially reconsidering their late-night habits, Fallon and his creative team could decide this is a moment to evolve certain aspects of The Tonight Show.
That doesn't necessarily mean transforming The Tonight Show into a political comedy program. But adding more commentary, expanding monologue segments, or finding new ways to engage with major national stories could help attract fans who suddenly find themselves looking for a new nightly routine or YouTube clips.
For now, Fallon's focus remains on delivering a star-studded week of guests. Monday's episode features comedy icon Tina Fey to discuss The Four Seasons, actor and comedian Marlon Wayans, and New York Yankees star Jazz Chisholm Jr. The show will also include a performance from the Broadway production of Schmigadoon!.
Tuesday's lineup includes Paul Rudd, legendary composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, actor Nicholas Galitzine, and musician Ron Taylor. Rudd will be on to promote his new movie Power Ballad, and Galitzine will give fans an inside look at Masters of the Universe.
Wednesday welcomes Rudd's co-star, Nick Jonas, comedian Amy Sedaris, and Violet Grohl. Thursday's episode features acclaimed actor John Lithgow, actress Regina Hall, and musician Malcolm Todd.
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon airs at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC. Content is also available to stream on Peacock.
