Stephen Colbert wants all the credit for Selena Gomez's engagement
By Matt Moore
This week, pop culture celebrated the engagement between Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco. But over on The Late Show, host Stephen Colbert is looking for a "thank you" for putting it all in motion.
Gomez surprised fans by announcing the news, sharing images of her engagement ring and more on Instagram. It came after about a year of dating the producer and songwriter.
Stephen Colbert's monologue on Thursday night led off with the big news. But rather than keep the spotlight soley on Gomez and Blanco, the Late Show host looked for his share of the credit.
Colbert reminded his audience that just last week, he interviewed Gomez and discussed her relationship with Blanco. The comedian then turned to the camera and delivered this message:
"Benny, you must think you're pretty special if you think you can do better than this," he said, pointing to Gomez. "And as America's dad, I want to know what your intentions are with America's daughter right over here."
The late-night TV host was anything but humble after sharing the news that Blanco took his advice and proposed to Gomez.
"Now, I don't want to take any credit for this engagement," Colbert said. "No. I want to take all the credit for this engagement."
According to Colbert, he's the one who "loosened the lid on the pickle jar of commitment." It's not exactly the most romantic metaphor, but it gets across the message that this celebrity couple owes something to Colbert.
We'll have to wait to see if Selena Gomez or Benny Blanco give Colbert a shout-out in the coming days. Or better yet, maybe the Late Show host will find himself invited to the wedding.
