Stephen Colbert stands up to Trump targeting 'homegrowns'

President Donald Trump continues to draw criticism for his policies deporting illegal immigrants and failure to follow orders on returning some individuals to America. In fact, the president doubled down and suggested "homegrowns" could be deported as well, prompting a strong response from Stephen Colbert.

At the center of the controversy is Kimlar Abrego Garcia, who was sent to an El Salvadaor prison in what whas initially described as an "administrative error." Yet the White House has made no effort to return Abrego Garcia to the U.S., even as courts rule the deportation had no legal standing.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert has followed the story closely. Wednesday night's monologue picked up on Trump's latest comments suggesting that Americans could also be deported to international prisons.

Colbert shared a clip of Trump on Fox News' Spanish-language network saying that "homegrown criminals" could potentially be sent to prisons in El Salvador.

"Nope. Wrong," Colbert said in response to Trump's "homegrown criminals" label. "The world you're looking for is 'American citizens,' not 'homegrowns,' OK?" the Late Show host added.

The comedian sounded baffled after hearing Trump's defintion of a "homegrown criminal" as someone who grew up, had something go wrong, and hit someone over the head with a baseball bat.

Colbert joked Trump must have grown up in a Looney Tunes episode if that's the worst crime he can think of. The late-night host certainly doesn't think it sounds worth of deportation to a notoriously harsh prison.

Like just about every other policy or idea from the Trump administration, Stephen Colbert isn't letting this one slide. Whether or not anything actually changes is another story, and one The Late Show will keep an eye on.
